STS-92 will be one of the most challenging
and interesting missions ever flown and we, the crew, look forward to
every day. Our work will begin at liftoff when we launch into the orbit
which will allow us to dock to the International Space Station two days
later. At that point, the on-orbit work begins in earnest. The Shuttle's
robotic arm will be used to place our payloads, the Z-1 Truss and Pressurized
Mating Adapter 3, in place on the Station. The Common Berthing Mechanism
will be used for the first and second times on orbit to attach them. We'll
conduct four space walks to configure the Z-1 and PMA-3 so they can be
used by following missions. In the process, we'll document the continued
construction of the Station using 3-d IMAX cameras, one in the payload
bay and one in the crew compartment. When all is said and done, we'll
be leaving the International Space Station ready to accept its first permanent
occupants and configured for Shuttle flights to follow.
The crew considers it an honor
to be part of the team conducting STS-92. That team consists of tens of
thousands of people around the world who have dedicated countless hours
to ensuring the success of the mission. We thank them for all their efforts,
and we thank you for your interest in our mission and in the space program.
